UNITED BOSS BLASTS REFEREE MCCURRY

NO PENALTY: Noel Hunt is held back by manager Levein

Monday May 12,2008

By Gary Keown

Dundee United boss Craig Levein reckons there’s no way the SFA will take an honest look at their role in the refereeing rows scarring the season.

The Tannadice outfit are reported to be preparing an official complaint to the game’s leaders over the performance of Mike McCurry and his linesmen in their 3-1 weekend loss to Rangers.

Levein launched a furious verbal assault on McCurry and accepts he will be hammered by the Hampden beaks. His remarks come in the wake of Aberdeen defender Zander Diamond slaughtering Iain Brines for disallowing a perfectly good goal at Parkhead, and Motherwell slamming Steve Conroy for his display in their recent loss to Celtic.

Hearts chairman Roman Romanov is also about to appear in front of disciplinary chiefs for claiming referees are biased in favour of the Old Firm.

When asked if the SFA would look within after the relentless criticism of their officials, Levein said: “No. We’re only Dundee United, so it doesn’t really matter. Who gives a toss about Dundee United?

“That was all about the pressure that was on Rangers. Can you imagine if this was the other way around? Mike McCurry would never referee another game.”

Levein was fizzing about McCurry’s refusal to give a penalty when Davie Weir clearly fouled Noel Hunt in the box early in the second period. United also had a goal chalked off when a Danny Swanson shot hit off Weir and wrong-footed Neil Alexander.

Levein blasted: “It is impossible to win at Ibrox. The last important game for us was the CIS Cup final (against Rangers) and we were cheated in that, too. After the final, I did my absolute best not to have a go at the referee [Kenny Clark] for denying us a blatant penalty, but maybe people are mistaking kindness for weakness on my part. I thought Mike McCurry was the kind of guy who had the balls to stand up and make decisions, but he bottled it.”
