GIVE US LOWER TAXES AND LESS WASTE IN WHITEHALL

Thursday May 8,2008

NEWS that market analysts predict further massive rises in gas and electricity prices is another hammer blow for hard-pressed families.

Everything seems to be getting much more expensive. Food bills are rocketing, supermarkets are no longer offering many buy-one-get-one-free deals, holiday surcharges are back and motoring costs are spiralling ever upwards.

In the House of Commons yesterday even Gordon Brown was forced to admit finally that, yes, “households are suffering”.

Naturally, he sought to place all the blame on a downturn in the world economy.

But that is only half the story. Government incompetence has also played its part. The failure to build sufficient storage facilities for gas or to invest in alternative power sources such as nuclear energy has left the British public at the mercy of the fuel profiteers.

More tellingly still, Labour’s profligacy with public spending and its failure to secure value for money from every taxpayer pound has greatly exacerbated the living standards crunch taking place across Britain.

If we are entering a permanent new era of more expensive food and fuel, living standards can only be protected if other items of expenditure are brought down in price. That must mean lower taxes and less waste in Whitehall.

The British public are smart enough to have worked that one out already. But, shockingly, their Prime Minister is not.
