THE music industry is known for its eccentric characters, with the stresses of fame proving too much for some.

But that’s no problem for trained psychiatrist Dr Sarah Kennedy, now heading for the charts after her band signed a big  deal with a US record company.

By day, Dr Sarah Kennedy works as a senior staff psychiatrist at the Brig mental health unit in Galashiels in the Borders.

After work, though, the glamorous 31-year-old spends every spare minute fronting a Mod band.

Her obsession with the sounds of the Sixties led to her singing with an organ-influenced band called Modus.

And now they’ve been snapped up to record their first CD with a US-based company.

The doc dons Sixties gear and becomes “Miss Modus” on stage. The band’s debut album, Sounds from the Kitten Casino, is now due for global release and will appear too on iTunes.

Edinburgh-based Sarah, a member of the Royal College of Psychiatry, said: “I manage to keep a good balance between work and music.

“I work all week, then at the weekend I’m playing gigs. People at work are far less surprised about my double life than folk I meet on the music scene. They’re shocked when I say I’m a doctor.

“I suppose the stage persona’s not what you’d expect from a psychiatrist, but I don’t see a conflict. My work is very rewarding but I’d be happy to put it on hold for a few years if the music took off.”

While Sarah performs, her drummer brother Scott Kennedy, bassist Bruce Wagener, guitarist Mel Johnson and Hammond organ virtuoso Rod Spark complete the line-up – signed to the Hammondbeat label.

The Portland, Oregon-based record label’s managing director, Kahlil Breitchaupt, said last night: “We’re really excited about Modus.

We’ve been looking for an exciting band with a great singer and we think they’ll have a huge global appeal.”
