His spokeswoman said he was not hurt when the car he was being driven in was shunted from behind.

The accident happened as he travelled to north Wales, via Hereford, to join Labour's local election campaign.

A Welsh Assembly government spokeswoman said: "The First Minister was not hurt and is feeling fine.

"He carried on to his political engagement. His main concern is for the passengers in the other cars."

A spokesman for West Midlands Ambulance Service said an ambulance was called to an accident on the A49 between Leominster and Ludlow.

Three cars were involved. One person was treated for leg injuries and another for head injuries.

Plaid Cymru AM Janet Ryder, who was driving home at the time, saw the accident and stopped to speak to Mr Morgan.

She said: "He was obviously shaken, but he was fine.

"It was the middle car that had been sandwiched between the two."
