UKBA PROBED AFTER MAN'S LEGS BROKEN

The Independent Police Complaints Commission is examining an operation by the UK Border Agency, a new Home Office agency.

Officers from the agency raided a restaurant in Wandsworth, south west London on Monday.

During the raid a man in his 30s ran out of the back of the building on to the roof.

An agency officer followed him. The man was later found on the ground with two broken legs.

IPCC Commissioner Nicholas Long said: "The IPCC's jurisdiction was extended in February to cover those UKBA officers exercising police-like powers and this is our first investigation into an incident involving UKBA.

"I will be looking to establish whether operational policies and procedures were properly followed and whether any lessons can be learned from this incident."

The investigation will be carried out by the UKBA' professional standards unit under the direction of the IPCC.

The agency combines the work of customs, visas and border and immigration agencies. It was officially launched earlier this week.
