Saturday April 5,2008

Joint 7-1 favourite Comply or Die, ridden by Timmy Murphy and trained by David Pipe, won the 2008 Grand National by four lengths.

He took the honours at Aintree ahead of King Johns Castle, Snowy Morning and Slim Pickings.

Irish jockey Murphy took the nine-year-old to his first Grand National win after 11 previous attempts.

Record crowds gathered at Aintree on Merseyside for the running of the world greatest steeplechase - the 161st Grand National.

All tickets were sold out well before the big race - with a further 600 million people watching at home.

Forty riders raced the National, with Cloudy Lane, trained by Red Rum trainer Ginger McCain's son Donald, as joint favourite.

Cloudy Lane, ridden by 27-year-old Jason Maguire, had been expected to lead the field but finish sixth.

Ladbrokes spokesman David Williams said: "As expected, people have woken up this morning and they have seen the name McCain and gone for it.

"Cloudy Lane is fast becoming the most popular public horse since Red Rum."

The 2005 Grand National winner Hedgehunter was also proving popular with punters.
