UK NEWSPHILIP IN HOSPITAL WITH CHEST AILMENTSaturday April 5,2008 By Martin EvansPRINCE Philip was under close observation in hospital last night after being admitted suffering from a chest infection. The Duke of Edinburgh, 86, was taken to the King Edward VII hospital in London and his condition continues to be monitored. Philip had been suffering from a cold earlier in the week but when the condition spread to his chest, doctors recommended he be admitted to hospital for further assessment and treatment. Philip, who is understood to have received treatment in the past for a heart condition, was able to walk into the hospital near London’s Baker Street, on Thursday afternoon, and his condition is not thought to be serious. Last night he was said to be sat up in bed from where he was able to continue working on his daily correspondence. Despite his age, Philip has remained in good health in recent years and has maintained a busy schedule attending more than 360 engagements a year. The Duke was last seen in public last Thursday when he joined the Queen in giving French President Nicolas Sarkozy and his wife Carla Bruni a formal send-off at Windsor Castle. A statement from Buckingham Palace said: “The Duke of Edinburgh has been admitted to the King Edward VII hospital for assessment and treatment for a chest infection.”
