PLEA-BARGAIN PLAN FOR FRAUD CASES
Attorney General Baroness Scotland QC
Fraudsters will be able to receive lower sentences if they admit their crimes under new measures being proposed.
Attorney General Baroness Scotland QC will publish the findings of a group of experts who concluded formal plea bargaining should be introduced for the first time.
The report is expected to set out a mechanism which will allow prosecutors in England and Wales to strike a deal with defendants in return for shorter jail terms or other lesser punishments.
Fraud costs the UK £14 billion a year, and the new proposals follow a major review of the crime published last year.
Previous Attorney General Lord Goldsmith QC admitted the way the criminal justice system deals with fraud could be significantly improved.
He said in March last year that plea bargaining had "attracted a good deal of strong support... although also some strong opposition".
He added that prosecutors in England and Wales would not adopt the American system of plea bargaining.
Although the initial plan is limited to fraud cases, last year's document appeared to indicate that the system could at some stage be expanded to other crimes.
Some commentators have called for plea bargaining to be introduced in terrorist cases, for example.
A RAY OF HOPE
03.04.08, 7:52pm
A ray of hope for the million or so people who lied on their mortgage application forms to overstate their earnings and all the BTL landlords who bought using residential mortgages.
Now they can cope a plea and spend 6 months inside instead of 12.

JAIL FOR INNOCENT CAUGHT ON INTERNET FRAUDS!
03.04.08, 11:13am
And these figures do not disclose the number of "innocent people caught on the internet frauds" and made "criminals" by charging them with fraud which they had would not have commtted in the first place.
The incompetent CPS/Police charge innocent people (to boost their target figures), who are caught in these frauds, giving enough time to real fraudsters to cover their tracks because these cases take atleast a year and half before they come to the courts.
By this time, the real fraudsters would have covered their tracks or disappeared.
We now live in a politically correct society, where the innocent has to prove their innocence in face of the "mafia style" powers and resources the CPS/Police have at their disposal to get a convictions of innocent people.
No wonder the jails are full !

BARONESS WHO SAYS WHAT?
03.04.08, 8:17am
This is just another Americanisation of our non existant laws by nobodies who were upgraded to positions they should not hold.
It is another way to pay back their rich friends when they are caught, the speaker of the house springs to mind.
