PROBE BEGINS INTO MARTIN'S EXPENSES

Story Image

Speaker Michael Martin

Tuesday April 1,2008

Commons Speaker Michael Martin is to face a sleaze probe over claims that his wife spent more than £4,000 of public money on taxis for shopping trips.

Westminster's Commissioner for Standards, John Lyon, has launched a preliminary investigation after accepting that the spending "may not have been in accordance with the Code of Conduct for Members of Parliament".

Mr Lyon decided further scrutiny was needed after receiving a complaint from pressure group the TaxPayers' Alliance in February.

In a letter to the TaxPayers' Alliance, Mr Lyon wrote: "In essence, the part of your complaint I have accepted is that Mrs Martin's expenditure on taxis may not have been in accordance with the Code of Conduct for Members of Parliament and its associated rules."

He added: "I am inviting Mr Speaker to let me have his comments on your complaint. Once I receive his response, I shall consider how to proceed."

A spokeswoman for the Commissioner's office confirmed that a preliminary investigation had begun.

News of the probe will heap more pressure on Mr Martin, who has been repeatedly criticised over his own use of public funds.

At the weekend it emerged that more than £700,000 has been spent improving his grace-and-favour residence in Westminster since 2001.

Meanwhile, questions have been raised over why he has claimed more than £75,000 in MPs' allowance for a second home, despite having no mortgage on the Glasgow property.

Mr Martin has also come under fire for his determination to block the publication of details of the generous allowances given to MPs.

CON?

02.04.08, 12:07am

Martin used air miles gained by ministerial flights to fly his family for free he has abused his expenses rights. He is also looking into MPs expenses a bit like putting the fox in charge of the hen house! Come on Brown get your head out of your a*se. You were not elected PM at least have the back bone to keep your cronies in line. Thank the lord that soon the public will have a say at the ballot box.

WILL THEY PAY OUR EXPENSES AS WELL PLEASE

01.04.08, 10:21pm

I have just written to Mr Brown asking him to pay our expenses as a 'service family' as he does his MP's.Because of being posted to another area, we are having to sell our home yet again and pay the government stamp duty of approx. £10,000 just to be able to buy the same property again in a more expensive area, even though THEY post us!

If MP's can have all their expenses paid I don't see why we can't have our's paid considering we work for this 'socialist' government as well. How does it go? EVERYBODY IS EQUAL, BUT SOME ARE MORE EQUAL THAN OTHERS!

Don't think he'll cough up somehow do you?
