£700,000 SPENT ON SPEAKER'S HOME

£700,000 has been spent on Speaker Michael Martin's home

Friday March 28,2008

The official residence of Commons Speaker Michael Martin has received improvements costing over £700,000 since he took the job.

More than £100,000 a year has been spent on average on items including furniture, art and air conditioning for the Grade 1-listed apartments.

The figures were released to the Daily Telegraph under the Freedom of Information Act and come as the Speaker is under intense pressure over MPs' expenses.

They show that £148,900 has been spent on furniture, £191,000 on a new air-conditioning system, £13,000 on art and £291,000 on "building restoration and refurbishment" in Speaker's House.

In total, £724,000 has been spent on the residence - which also includes the State Rooms of the Palace of Westminster - since 2001. Mr Martin was elected Speaker in October 2000.

Another £992,000 has been spent on Speaker's Garden, although most of the costs have gone on improving security since 9/11. Security costs for the Palace as a whole have escalated since 2001.

Mr Martin's spokeswoman said the spending was part of a rolling programme of improvements which were commissioned by the Parliamentary Estates Directorate.

The Speaker has already come under fire for claiming more than £75,000 of second homes allowance on his Glasgow property, for which he has no mortgage.

In the last week, the House of Commons Commission - which the Speaker chairs - has faced criticism from MPs for launching a High Court appeal against the release of a detailed breakdown of MPs' second home claims.

Mr Martin, a former sheet metal worker who now earns £138,000 a year, has barred MPs from talking about the legal bid in the Commons.

LOOKS CAN BE DECIEVING!

I always thought Michael Martin was a steady and honest looking person. But I got it wrong, they are all corrupt to the core. It feels like we are living in France prior to the revolution. I think its time for the guillotine to be rolled out.

When anyone of these greedy, corrupt, incompetent politician comes to ask for a vote at my door step, they can expect to be greeted with a garland of old shoes and slippers and some rotten eggs.

And if they want free transport, I would also provide them free donkeys to take them out of House of Conmen/Women so the public knows what they are.

VERY NICE JOB IF YOU CAN GET IT !

29.03.08, 8:16am

How lovely to have the taxpayer doing up your house and making it all comfy and completed with mod cons galore.
This is nest feathering at its greatest !
I wonder when he hears of people like the previous poster who has £15 a day to live on...does he not feel just a tad greedy.
Does he not feel a tad guilty when he hears of little children living in poverty in Britain today.
Does he not cringe when he hears of the elderly scrimping and saving to pay their bills.
Does he just turn a blind eye when he sees the hard working man/ woman of this country just about keeping their head above the waves of debt.
Families are struggling in a way not seen for many years.
Yet these MPs are living in cloud cuckoo land with inceasingly obcsene wages.
Greedy Greedy MPs !

BREATHTAKING ARROGANCE INDEED

29.03.08, 3:50am

Is anyone in the slightest bit surprised to read that the Speaker of the House of Conmen has been on the receiving end of fabulous home improvements and claiming £70,000 for his second home in Glasgow for which he has no mortgage?

If you check the current Who's Who of our prison population, you will be struggling to find any MP's named therein.

The time has arrived - thanks to the Freedom of Information Act - for all MP's to put their cards on the table and be open about just how much they are claiming from the taxpayer each year.

Sounds good. Unfortunately, it will never happen. Why? Simple! Here you are dealing with professional conmen/women - an elite gaggle of individuals who form the 600+ members of the House of Conmen. They make the laws. They break the laws. They twist the laws to suit themselves. They grab whatever is going - in the form of expenses, expenses and yet more expenses. They claim thousands of pounds for staff who do not work (I always thought that was false pretences/deception, apparently not in the Housof Conmen).

Is it a mere coincidence that so many MP's are qualified lawyers? They definitely have the "gift of the gab".

Michael Martin is a classic example of the greedy/arrogant MP's whom are skilled at frothing waffle and reams of spin - done, I suspect, to create an effect of "smoke and mirrors" in the House of Conmen - and the words integrity/credibility are left far behind as these morons are jumping over each others' backs to line their own pockets in any which way they can - greed indeed. Being an MP is a license to print money - heaps of money - all at the taxpayers expense.

You only need to listen to the likes of Gordon Brown and Michael Martin to get the gist of what I am stating. Waffle, spin, smoke and mirrors is right there, staring you in the face.

Late night sittings in the House of Conmen? No problem! An MP can - and certainly does - claim £160 cash for every night they are obliged to stay the night in London That makes my £15 per day to live on look quite pathetic. Imagine it, £15 per day to pay for all my electricity, gas, food and all other household expenses.

The House of Conmen is rotten to the core - headed by squeaker Michael Martin - another glib, money-grabbing parasite.

The thought occurs to me that the only person who entered the House of Conmen with good intentions was Guy Fawkes.

Meanwhile, nothing will change regarding MP's expenses - certainly not while you have the likes of Michael Martin heading this clique of devious outcasts.
