SIR BOBBY IN £500,000 CANCER CHARITY PLEA

Sir Bobby Robson

Wednesday March 26,2008

FORMER England manager Sir Bobby Robson took on the biggest challenge of his life yesterday – by launching a charity to fight cancer.

Sir Bobby, 75, who is battling with the disease for the fifth time, wants the charity, rather than football, to be his legacy.

And his aim is for the Sir Bobby Robson Foundation to raise  £500,000 in just three months to help equip a centre for the treatment of cancer and also support trials of new drugs.

Sir Bobby said: “I may have had cancer five times but thanks to the wonderful treatment I have had through the National Health Service my life has been saved.

“Now it’s time I paid them back.”

The first target will be to aid a new cancer  unit at Freeman Hospital in Newcastle upon Tyne, the city whose team Sir Bobby used to manage.

At a press conference in the city, Sir Bobby was supported by former Arsenal goalkeeper Bob Wilson, local footballing hero Peter Beardsley and TV presenters Des Lynam and Jim Rosenthal.

Sir Bobby, born in Co Durham, said: “Just think how fantastic it would be if we could find a cure for cancer that would not only save the lives of North-east people, but sufferers worldwide.”

His latest bout with cancer is inoperable – although its progress can be slowed by drugs.

The idea for him to help the new unit came from discussions with  Dr Ruth Plummer, senior lecturer in medical oncology at Newcastle University.

Anyone wishing to donate can do so online at justgiving.com/thesirbobbyrobsonfoundation or by cheque to Sir Bobby Robson Foundation, PO Box 307, Heaton, Newcastle upon Tyne, NE7 7QG.

Although i have the gratest of respect for Sir Bobby, i would like to ask the gentelman, how much are you personally putting in? also how much are the likes of the multi millionaires donating, Sir Paul Mc could finance the whole thing if he had the mind, so why not ask the millionaires.
