By John Twomey

Two teenage thugs faced jail last night after they admitted killing a university graduate who objected to them throwing litter.

Evren Anil, 23, confronted the youths after a half-eaten Lion chocolate bar was hurled through the open window of his sister’s car.

The black Peugeot had stopped at traffic lights and  passenger Mr Anil got out to remonstrate with the pair.

But as he did so, one of them pulled out a knife. There was a scuffle and Mr Anil suffered a fatal blow to his head as he crashed to the ground.

His horrified sister Elif, 26, helped him struggle to his feet and return to the car.

But he fell unconscious a short time later and was taken to hospital.

He slipped into a coma and died eight days after the daylight attack in Upper Norwood, south London, in August last year.

Two youths, aged 16 and 17, were arrested and  charged with murder. But the pair admitted manslaughter on the eve of their trial.

The 16-year-old pleaded guilty to manslaughter and possession of an article with a blade or point on Monday. The 17-year-old admitted the same charges yesterday.

Old Bailey judge Ann Goddard asked for probation reports to be prepared before sending the killers to jail. She said: “It must be understood that this is not with a view to a community sentence. It seems to me custody is the appropriate sentence.”

The defendants cannot be named for legal reasons. But as she remanded them in custody, the judge said she would consider lifting the identity ban at sentencing, which she set for April 4.

Joanna Korner, QC, prosecuting, said the 17-year-old admitted punching Mr Anil during a scuffle after the wrapper was thrown.

She added: “Having done so, he was confronted by the deceased and a verbal dispute ensued.

“There was some physical contact involving the deceased grabbing the

T-shirt of the defendant. This resulted in the defendant punching the deceased.

“The defendant took out a knife to frighten the deceased but he says he did not intend to use it. He then passed it to the 16-year-old.”

The younger defendant denied threatening the victim with a knife but admitted being involved in the fight.

Miss Korner said passerby Derek Porter went to get help from nearby Gipsy Hill police station – but it was closed as it was a Sunday.

In his statement, Mr Porter also said the lout who tossed the half-eaten Lion bar had acted like a “gunfighter from a Western” when challenged by Mr Anil.

Another witness, Susan Hunt, said the victim hit his head “heavily against the kerb” as he fell.

Mr Anil, of Upper Norwood, was only a week into a new job after graduating with a first class honours degree in computer science.

The youngest of four children, he came to the UK from Turkey at the age of three with his father, Niyazi, 52, a retired caterer, and mum Altun, 48.

Mr Anil was a talented footballer and played in a Sunday league in Croydon.

His sister described him as “an angel”. In a statement read out in court, she said: “I have contemplated suicide to ease my pain. My brother Ozgur has had to receive psychiatric treatment. I will forever have a broken heart.”

NO HANGING MORE KILLINGS!

05.03.08, 9:14am

Why get up tight about what happens here every day, this is result of years of liberal education and letting children do what they want.

Nothing will happen until someone bites the bullet and brings back hanging ,but all the do gooders and" what if they were innocent" will not allow it so we are stuck with it.

Have they ever given a thought to the people who these people kill, no, but they will when a family member of theirs is killed.

It will suddenly become "a tooth for a tooth and a life for a life".

WELCOME TO GHETTO BRITAIN (NOT GREAT BRITAIN)

05.03.08, 6:49am

Two teenage thugs faced jail last night after they admitted killing a university graduate who objected to them throwing litter.

This is the depths parts of our society have fallen to. I would call these thugs animals but that would be unfair on animals. Animals kill for food and protection. These .......? kill for fun and pleasure.

Charles Darwin must be shaking his head.

I'll tell you why people don't get involved because you run the real risk of being either beaten to a pulp, stabbed or shot to death.

If you're lucky to survive you then run the risk of obtaining a criminal record, sued or losing your job.

If your even luckier you'll get to attend the court farce and watch these toe rags get a slap on the wrist.

They'll then find out where you live to intimidate you and your family. Police will do nothing only to tell you if you take the law into your own hands you'll be arrested.

It's a joke.

Its time the Goverment won back control of the streets. Get tough! and if that doesn't work get tougher until it does otherwise Ghetto Britain here we come!
