UNDERWATER SEARCH FOR MISSING GIRL
Shannon Matthews, 9, who is missing from her home
Saturday February 23,2008
Detectives are continuing the hunt for missing nine-year-old Shannon Matthews with underwater searches.
The searches will focus on the Dewsbury Moor area and an underwater team will investigate a pond in the vicinity.
Shannon, from Moorside Road, Dewsbury Moor, West Yorkshire, failed to return home from school after a swimming trip on Tuesday afternoon.
A police operation involving 250 officers and desperate day-and-night searches by friends and relatives have failed to find her.
On Friday, officers said they were "gravely concerned" about the schoolgirl.
Police also released CCTV footage showing the "timid" youngster shortly before she disappeared. The CCTV images, released by West Yorkshire Police, show Shannon entering and leaving the Dewsbury Sports Centre Swimming Pool, surrounded by a group of friends.
Detective Superintendent Andy Brennan told a press conference how Shannon returned to school with her friends after the swimming trip. But a sighting of her leaving school at 3.10pm remains the last confirmed time she was spotted despite a number of other unconfirmed sightings after this, which are still under investigation.
Mr Brennan also confirmed statements made by Shannon's natural father, who separated from her mother, Karen, a number of years ago, that she had written on her bedroom wall about wanting to go and live with him. But Mr Brennan said this was just part of an array of scribbles that the youngster had daubed on the wall.
The nine-year-old had also expressed desires to leave home, Mr Brennan added. "She had suggested to a number of friends that she didn't want to go home and we are investigating that as well. We do remain gravely concerned," he said.
Shannon's mother Karen, 32, said her daughter had not expressed a wish to go and live with her father and had a close relationship with her stepfather, 22-year-old Craig Meehan, whom she had lived with for four years.
NEWSPAPER COVERAGE

Can someone say why there has been very little coverage of this poor child? I look every day and I know others do too and it is extremely hard to find mention of her, I think this is disgusting, a child is a child is a child.

POOR LITTLE LOVE

We haven't forgotten you darling and are praying hard that you are found and returned safely to your mummy.
This is about Shannon a little 9 year old girl missing from her home and her family must be suffering badly and my heart goes out to them. This is not about Madeleine McCann Betty, so why use this child to dig at Madeleine's parents?
God Bless Shannon, thinking of you so much want you found safe and well xxx

MISSING SHANNON

I read in another paper that Shannon was annoyed at the fact that her brother was given a new computer and gifts to stop him from running away all the time.
The little mite was jealous (Which quite rightly so)
She maybe thought that if she did the same then she would get also.
Of course everything would be taken seriously as the police are involved not just social services.

She usually walked home (5 mins walk) with some friends - that's not so unusual, but this time she went in a different direction.
Apparently she has an older brother who runs off from time to time - she probably got the idea from him.

Hope you are found safe and well soon sweetheart.
As for wanting to run away, the main priority at the moment is that she is found. Only then should they investigate what is happening within that family.
They will be going through enough.
Regardless of what we may think, her Mother looked broken in her picture.
Very different from the Mother of Madeleine.

I hope that what Shannon's real father says about her running away from home, and also her brother running away on previous occasions is taken seriously. How many times have social services overlooked all the signs leading to a tragedy. The photo I saw of her mother was a bit strange in itself. It doesn't matter what the mother portrays, she may be innocent in all this, but what was this little girl doing walking on her own at that time of the evening? I hope Shannon is found and tells the truth of the reason why she ran away, that's if she did run away and it hopefully was anything other than that.
