BROWN FIGHTS TO RECLAIM INITIATIVE
Gordon Brown is expected to push on with his political fightback as he stages his first Downing Street press conference of the year.
The Prime Minister is hoping to reclaim the political initiative after a bruising end to 2007 which saw Labour's opinion poll ratings plummet.
A Populus poll on Tuesday in The Times newspaper shows Labour narrowing the Tory lead to just four points compared with an eight-point gap last month.
The reduction, however, was almost entirely due to a surge in support for the Liberal Democrats, following the election of new leader Nick Clegg, at the expense of the Conservatives.
And Mr Brown also saw his own personal leadership rating fall behind Tory leader David Cameron.
In an attempt to generate some political momentum, ministers are gearing up for a series of major policy announcements - including the expected go ahead for a new generation of nuclear power stations later this week.
Mr Brown took the lead on Monday when he unveiled plans for a new NHS programme to screen for preventable diseases.
And he will join Children's Secretary Ed Balls on Tuesday in launching the National Year of Reading in a bid to encourage more youngsters to take up books.
But while ministers hope that they have put the worst of last year's troubles behind them, they know that they face a tough 12 months ahead.
Mr Brown has warned of a difficult year for the economy in the wake of the global "credit crunch" triggered by the collapse of the sub prime credit market.

FOOLS
08.01.08, 10:24am
Recent poll states 33% of people would vote Labour. I have come to the conclusion that I live in a Land inhabited by morons. The damage that the Mac Mafia have done to the UK is immeasurable and still these fools cant see the wood for the trees. Calamity Cameron and Clueless Clegg are not much better. I must get out of this doomed country while I can.

LIB DEM SURGE?
08.01.08, 9:17am
Brown is obviously struggling and is on his way out, but I am flabbergasted people seem to be turning to the Lib Dems.
When will people ever learn? A vote for Lib Dem is a vote for more Labour. The Lib Dems will never get a majority and are just a "sink" for disaffected Labour voters. The Lib Dems will always side with Labour and in a hung parliament we will get a Lib/Lab coalition. How nice! What would it mean for us? No change, more EU, more tax, more immigration, more hot air, more political correctness, more waste. Most importantly don't forget the fool Clegg would give an amnesty to illegal immigrants. I mean they are crooks, they are illegal aren't they?. What kind oif fool would give an amnesy to a criminal? If you are fed up with Labour/Brown and you want change there is no point in looking at the Lib Dems.
