ARCHBISHOP IN ATTACK ON ATHEISTS

Saturday December 22,2007

Militant atheists who pour scorn on the Christian faith as "superstitious nonsense" have been denounced as the "new fundamentalists" by the most senior Anglican clergyman in Wales.

The Archbishop of Wales, Dr Barry Morgan, said the new phenomenon of "atheistic fundamentalism" in British society was dangerous because it refused to allow any contrary viewpoint and affected public perception of religion.

This approach had led to developments such as local authorities calling Christmas Winterval, the removal of Christian symbols from hospital chapels and schools refusing to put on nativity plays, Dr Morgan said in his Christmas message.

"All of this is what I would call the new "fundamentalism" of our age and any kind of fundamentalism, be it Biblical, atheistic or Islamic, is dangerous, because it allows no room for disagreement, for doubt, for debate, for discussion," he said in his Christmas message.

"It leads to the language of expulsion and exclusivity, of extremism and polarisation, and the claim that because God is on our side, He is not on yours."

Dr Morgan's Christmas message comes after the general director of the Evangelical Alliance, the Rev Joel Edwards, compared militant atheists this week to King Herod in their intolerance of religious faith.

Their remarks follow the rise of militant atheists such as Oxford University scientist Richard Dawkins, whose book The God Delusion, has been a bestseller.

ARCHBISHOP IN ATTACK ON ATHEISTS

23.12.07, 11:18pm

It would seem the Welsh Archbishop seem something of a prat. It’s not the Atheists but the PC brigade who are responsible for these ludicrous actions, they are afraid we migh upset our Islamic friends.

As for fundamentalism it exists in all faiths. Why don’t Christians look back at their practices in the Middle Ages? I am not a believer in any religious faith nor am I an Atheist. Both are certain that God exists or doesn’t exist as the case may be. Agnostics like me are no so arrogant and we admit we don’t know. The one thing I am certain of is that all religions are man made and are little more than a means of controlling the masses by the few.

SIR CUMFRENCE

23.12.07, 8:04pm

Dear Sir, I am not replying to start a slanging match. We do have something in common, I too was brought up a Catholic and was made to feel guilty every day about sinning. I agree it was a form of brain washing. I gave up going to church. But since I have developed a mind of my own if you like and have came to the conclusion, there must be a God but not the God that I was led to believe by the Catholic church. One of my thoughts was, if all the planets were taken away from the universe we are left with a black space, where did that come from? The big bang theory, who lit the fuse? It just seems to awesome for it to happen by chance. You mentioned scientists having the answers, don't you think God is a scientist too. We as humans are insignificant when you look at the universe as a whole. I have mentioned a few reasons why I believe in God and Jesus. I do apologise for the word "Fool". To conclude, I look at this life as a second division team and if you give life your best shot, some day you will join the premier division.

WINTERVAL

23.12.07, 1:11pm

How many more times are we going to read the nonsense that councils are trying to replace Christmas with Winterval? This rubbish is trotted out every year in papers like the Express, Mail and Sun. Winterval was actually an advertising promotion in Birmingham in the late 1990s, to persuade people to take short winter breaks in the city. It has nothing to do with Christmas, political correctness or the fictitious "War on Christmas".

FIREOWL

23.12.07, 3:43am

Having looked at what you have wrote, I can only conclude that you are probably called Richard Cranium. Whatever YOU believe doesn't allow you to call others that don't, fools. In fact, if you are such a devout christian, then you would not even offer any view about other peoples views, because you would be too busy turning the other cheek. For your information. I was brainwashed into catholicism. I suffered under the "communal" guilt, that has been well worn by all catholics since time immemorial. However. As I got older I began to realise that I was being fed a big lie, a fairy story, a fable to end all fables. I soon realised that God is a man made thing. Something that mankind can blame when the poo hits the fan. You speak as if you know something definite. I speak as someone who knows science, and can debunk any and all of your myths quite easily. The only reason the clergy are getting edgy is because they are starting to realise that people are beginning to see through the "fairy" story. Let's be honest here. If there were such a thing as a God. Would all the problems that are in the world be allowed to happen? Would there be draught in the Sudan? Would the people in Biafra have had to put up with the starvation etc? Would deseases like AIDS be allowed to propogate? Well all I can say is, "that is some loving God you have there!"

P.S. I have already got my T-Shirt with "I told you it was just a story" printed on it...

I DO NOT KNOW ABOUT ATHEISTS BUT...

22.12.07, 11:34pm

I reckon PC has a lot to answer for with all the jobsworths 'in it's employ' making life miserable for Christians and promoting fear of upsetting other faiths.
Religion is of personal choosing but one way and another we get it rammed down our throats from dawn to dusk.
Accepting that this is a Christian country, that
being the case, in any form of dispute the host country is not the one to be persecuted by fear of upsetting others because if they really do not like it here then they have a choice. It's about time we put pay to it and dumped PC and religious squabbles once and for all they both create far too much trouble

ATHEISM IS NOT THE PROBLEM

22.12.07, 10:53pm

I think the problem is not one of atheism but is rather the lack of value placed on matters spiritual.

Our society is seriously infected by a pervasive, shallow, crude materialism. And that can affect many of those who would describe themselves as believers in the divine.

This is borne out by the fact that the ultimate justification for just about any government policy is that it would be good for the economy. Conversely, the ultimate condemnation of a policy is that it might curb economic growth.
