BROWN CASH VOW LEAVES PENSIONERS PENNILESS

SCANDAL: The neediest are hit worst

Saturday December 22,2007

By Gabriel Milland, Political Correspondent

THOUSANDS of pensioners could be left penniless for Christmas after a bureaucratic blunder stopped them getting their money early.

Gordon Brown told MPs last week that pensions due on Monday would be paid yesterday to stop a last-minute Christmas Eve rush.

But around 2.6 million of the poorest pensioners were left disappointed after the Prime Minister’s words failed to match reality.

A computer glitch means that they will still not get their money until Monday because they also receive pension credit.

The Department of Work and Pensions said it was impossible to re-programme the pension credit computers to bring payments forward to yesterday.

To prevent people being paid twice, both payments will now be made on Monday.

Help the Aged attacked the Government for not realising that the problem would happen and warned that many pensioners would face difficulties.

Anna Pearson, the organisation’s policy manager, said: “These pensioners are among the most vulnerable and will be left with precious little time to buy their food for the week.

“Apparently, and unfortunately, the Government’s computer system cannot accommodate bringing these payments forward.

“The Government did not do nearly enough to prevent this situation occurring. It should have consulted with stakeholders like Help the Aged.

“However, we have been given assurances that a review will occur so that this situation never happens again.”

The millions of pensioners who will have to wait until Monday will be left with just a few hours to do last-minute Christmas shopping.

Those who collect their money from a post office rather than have it paid into bank accounts will find that virtually all branches will close at 12.30pm on Monday.

Tens of thousands of other benefit claimants, including those on disability allowance, have also had their payments brought forward to Monday.

A Help the Aged spokesman estimated that around three million claimants will be queueing up on Monday morning for money to see them through the week. But a spokesman for the Department for Work and Pensions insisted that the system would be able to cope.

He said: “Every pensioner will receive their payment before Christmas and three-quarters of pensions due during the Christmas week will be available on December 21.

“Pension credit customers have had their money advanced to Christmas Eve, and the post office has assured us that they will be able to serve all our customers on these days.” But postmasters were reporting chaos up and down the country last night.

Stephen Barnes, who runs a branch near Kendal in Cumbria, said he had been forced to turn away dozens of disappointed pensioners.

“We’ve had about 30 or 40 in who’ve believed the Prime Minister when he said their pensions will be paid on Friday.

“A lot of elderly people don’t know if they’re on pensions, pension credit or whatever. But what Mr Brown said wasn’t clear anyway.

“It’s a mess. I feel sorry for them, but we’ll be closing at 12.30pm on Monday whatever happens.”

Meanwhile, a problem with at least one of the leading high street banks prevented other pensioners getting any money at all yesterday. Worst hit were pensioners who use the post office card account to take cash direct from local branches.

PENSIONERS HAPPY XMAS FROM BROWN

22.12.07, 11:11am

So once again idiot Brown has shown his competence by once again opening his mouth promising that he can't deliver without checking it out within his own useless govt. Still really won't matter as he knows it will all be over by the next question time..Still "lessons will be learnt" and an inquiry will be set up to find out why nothing will be done in "the interest of the nation" so we must now "draw a line under it" and move on.....Utter Contempt for the aged.

BROWN CASH VOW LEAVES PENSIONERS PENNILESS

22.12.07, 10:55am

"The words Labour and incompetence are now synonymous and endemic within that shambolic organisation.

Also remember that we are talking about Mr Brown the man who once showed his utter contempt for Pensioners by giving them a derisory 75 pence a week rise in their pensions.

NEVER BELIEVE GORDON BROWN

22.12.07, 10:30am

Bungling Mr Mc Bean strikes again. The man is incompetent, hopeless, useless, inept and ineffectual. He is simply not up to it and is doomed to failure. This unpromising and worthless substitute Prime Minister is a complete waste of time! On top of that, he lies.

Only a dimwit would vote for Labour.
