POLICE BOSS 'DISAPPOINTED' OVER PAY
Sir Ian Blair called on the Government to think again over pay
Britain's most senior policeman has joined the condemnation of the Government's decision to "pick a fight" over pay, saying he was "very disappointed".
But Metropolitan Police Commissioner Sir Ian Blair said the service should offer major reforms of officers' salary structures in return for a U-turn on the pay deal.
Home Secretary Jacqui Smith sparked outrage when she announced that a 2.5% rise agreed at arbitration would not be backdated - effectively reducing it to below 2%.
The Police Federation is to ballot members on the right to strike - which they are currently denied - amid growing public anger from senior officers. Prime Minister Gordon Brown has refused to back down, insisting the move is a crucial element in keeping down inflation to ensure the economy remains stable.
But Sir Ian called on the Government to think again - and on the Federation to consider negotiating an agreement over "the balance of productivity against pay".
"I am very disappointed with the Government's decision," he told the BBC Radio 4 Today programme. "I don't understand why this particular fight has been picked. I do not think we need to be in this position."
"I disassociate myself from requests for the Home Secretary to resign - I think she is a very good Home Secretary - but I think this is a mistake and I told her that and I told her predecessor that. Not enough notice has been taken of the special nature of policing, in the sense that police officers don't have the right to strike."
He went on: "We've got to get out of this place and one of the things I've been saying to officials is that, as we move into the new year, we've got to find some place for negotiation. Some of that may be that we need to get an opportunity to examine how police pay is constructed.
"There are some things that could be changed, like the fact that all sergeants and constables are paid shift allowance whether they are on shifts or not, they are paid for their length of service not their skills, and the only way to get a pay rise is to be promoted, whereas in teaching you can stay in a classroom and get paid more and more.
"I think if we could negotiate with the Federation that they were prepared to examine these issues, then perhaps the Government could then find a way of reversing what I think is a mistake."

POLICE PAY
22.12.07, 9:35am
As a retired Police Officer I look back to 1979 when the government decided on the 'Edmund Davies' formula where Police Pay was seen as a special case and kinked to the cost of living index. There must be also a case to stop recruiting PCSO's and give them the opportunity to join the real police or leave. their pay is nearly that of a Police Officer.
Commisioner Blair wants to state exactly who he supports and show leadership and stop sitting on the fence.

PEELER PAY.
22.12.07, 9:32am
The peelers of this country are lazy, uncaring and do not deserve a decent wage, they are only interested in the easy pinch.
It was 3 weeks before anyone investigated the theft of several thousand pound from my father in law whilst in the care of the local authority.
These coppers love the politically correct systems as they can spend more time in the warm station doing next to nowt.
I read last week that the average copper spends 13% of his time on the beat. They ain't worth what they already get.
Community police officers, what a laugh, not even the power of arrest.

TASTE OF OWN MEDICINE
22.12.07, 7:20am
If the Government persist in this disgraceful attempt to ignore an independent tribunal ruling on pay, (would it have been ignored if it related to MP's pensions and allowances ?) the Police have the answer in their back pocket. Suspend all security duties relating to the Prime Minister and all Cabinet and Government Officers - let them get on with their jobs with no protection at all from the Boys in Blue...and see how they squeal. If we lose one or two high ranking MPs to terrorist attacks, are we that bothered..not really, its about time the voters rammed home the message that the Government is supposed to be acting on voters behalf, not following party dogma rigidly. Lets have a showdown.

PIGGY IN THE MIDDLE...?

It looks like top cop is playing at piggy in the middle.
He flatters and patronises both sides with this stance.
Whatever happens our piggy in the middle can't lose out even if he decides to sit on the fence.

....but who put the real cops in the stations and the plastic ones on the streets.?
Someone must have made the decision as it is happening on our streets in many towns, there is more to this than meets the eye as it is such a cock-eyed decision there must be as no one in their right mind would put an amateur in the place of a trained professional.
Who knows what's next send the territorials on an excursion instead of the SAS?
