DANGER: Son should be locked up

Thursday November 1,2007

By Martin Evans

A DESPERATE mother has pleaded for her paedophile son to be locked up after a judge said his crimes did not warrant a jail term.

Convicted sex offender Anthony Davies, 19, admitted having 1,200 indecent images of children earlier this year.

He was given a Sexual Offences Prevention Order but breached it when he persuaded four children aged 11 and 12 to go on a fishing trip with him without their parents’ knowledge.

Several child welfare experts have said he is likely to reoffend but Judge Francis Gilbert QC said the courts could not imprison someone just because they posed a danger.

Davies’ mother asked for her son to be locked up for his own safety after their home was attacked by local people. Win-dows in their home remained boarded up last night after being smashed by vigilante gangs.

Davies was remanded in custody on Tuesday but is expected to be freed at a hearing in two weeks’ time. Judge Gilbert QC said while Davies had breached the terms of his order by taking the children fishing he had not actually abused them.

He said as no contact crime had taken place he could not impose a lengthy prison term, adding that it would be better for Davies to get help rather than go to prison. But an MP last night warned that the judge’s ruling was putting children at risk.

Dan Norris, Labour MP for Wansdyke and a prominent child welfare campaigner, said: “The public should be outraged and dismayed that a man with these convictions is sentenced with this upside-down thinking.

“The purpose of the courts is to protect the public. The judge’s logic is completely outrageous – he is taking a chance and children are being put at risk.

If Davies needs psychological help he can get therapy in prison – that is part of the point of a custodial sentence.”

Davies, of Plymouth, was convicted in March and given an 18-month jail sentence but walked free because he had already served nine months remanded in custody. He was also charged with abducting a five-year-old boy and a 10-year-old girl in April and indecently assaulting the girl, all of which he denied.

The abduction charge was dropped and the indecent assault allowed to remain on file. But he was back before the court after breaching his SOPO, which banned contact with youngsters by taking four children on a fishing trip. But Judge Gilbert told Plymouth Crown Court: “Being a danger isn’t an offence, and I have to sentence him for what he has done, not what he may do.”

Neighbours in Plymouth last night described him as a “dangerous monster who should be behind bars”. Michelle Collins, 24, a mother-of-two who lives next door to Davies, said: “I am horrified at the judge’s comments and decision.

Davies is a danger and I don’t want him anywhere near my children. I don’t even let them play outside if he is around.”

ANOTHER EXAMPLE OF H.O.

01.11.07, 6:56am

Surely the majority of people have understood or realized the effect p.c. inane policies and activities mainly started in the H.O. and then spread around the throughout the whole of the C.J. system.

How can a Judge act in the way the public want and expect :-

1. when he is not allowed to sentence without considering the p.c. reports submitted by social worker types - most do not believe inprison what ever the offence.

2. we dont have criminals in the UK (so why should b people go to prison anyway?) - we only have disadvantaged people.

3. all in the cj system have a non judgemental policy, attitude and belief.

4. there is a no blame culture throughout the whole of the CJ system.

These policies and beliefs have been slow a creeping disease from the HO for many years - during the last ten or so they have been enforced, enforced and turned into a cascade.

Dont just blame individuels!
