EU MEAT EXPORTS BAN LIFTED

Friday August 24,2007

The EU ban on exports of British livestock, meat and dairy products is to be largely lifted, it was announced last night.

It was imposed after the foot and mouth outbreak earlier this month.

Veterinary officers meeting in Brussels agreed exports could resume from tomorrow although the ban will continue in the six-mile surveillance zone around the farms in Surrey where the outbreak occurred.

The National Farmers’ Union said it was “fantastic news” while Britain’s deputy chief veterinary officer Fred Landeg, who briefed yesterday’s meeting, expressed confidence the outbreak was now over.

“We believe the risk of finding any further disease is very low,” he said.

The Department for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs was lifting the movement ban from midnight last night.

It covered cattle, sheep, goats and pigs and products made from them.
