Alan Sugar needs more 'empathy'

Thursday November 5,2009

By Anil Dawar

ALAN Sugar faced demands for his resignation as Gordon Brown’s enterprise tsar last night after branding struggling small businessmen “moaners” who lived in “Disney World”.

The Federation of Small Businesses insisted Lord Sugar should step down and called on the Prime Minister to appoint someone with “more empathy” to replace him.

The multi-millionaire Apprentice TV star made his controversial comments at a question-and-answer session with businessmen in Manchester on Tuesday.

He claimed a mere 15 per cent of businesses turned down for bank loans had anything to complain about.

The rest, he added, were “moaners” who were bust and needed “an insolvency practitioner” in- stead of more money.

He then accused young entrepreneurs of living in an “unrealistic Disney World”.

Yesterday, federation chairman John Wright said: “Lord Sugar appears to have let his TV personality from The Apprentice take over and the language he has used to describe this country’s small business owners is hardly appropriate. Members have been in touch to complain about Lord Sugar’s recent performances around the country and we have to call that he resign from his position.

“We urge the Prime Minister to appoint someone with a greater understanding of, and more empathy for, the small business sector.”

Last night Lord Sugar said: “People might not always like what I say, but I tell it how I see it.

“A delegate survey from the event I attended indicated that 80 per cent of the people there found my advice helpful.”
