SMART PEDESTRIAN CROSSING A 'BREAKTHROUGH' FOR MOTORISTS

Pressure sensors can tell whether people are actually standing at the crossing or just passing by, as reported by the Austrian Times.

The invention has been hailed as a "breakthrough" by researchers at Spain's Biomechanical Institute in Valencia.

They say it will avoid pointless delays for motorists.

"It means there is no need for a pedestrian phase that drivers find very frustrating when no-one is waiting to cross the road," said one of the team.
