WHAT SHOULD BE DONE WITH BANKERS' BONUSES?

Story Image

George Osborne outlines his plan in London's Docklands today

Monday October 26,2009

GEORGE OSBORNE today called for bank cash bonuses to be turned into credit for hard-pressed small businesses.

Amid growing anger that bank bosses will pay billions of pounds in bonuses to City workers this year, the Shadow Chancellor said: “Let’s end the big cash bonuses.

"If there’s spare cash at the bank it should be lent out to small businesses, medium businesses, to help people keep their jobs.

“This is still a credit crunch, and it would be inexcusable for banks to pay out big bonuses to their staff, when there are so many businesses that need that cash.”

He stressed he was not talking about "branch staff on £12,000" or “people at the cash tills”, but high earners, sometimes on six-figure bonuses.

From your comment, its obvious your in the banking business, who else on this planet thinks bankers should continue getting bonus's while other people lose their homes and god knows what else. Bonus for what may I ask? being a priviliged banker?

FUND ELECTRONIC WASTE RECYCLING

05.11.09, 9:48am

Why not use the bonuses to fund a scheme staffed by unemployed Britons, to recycle/refurbish electronic waste such as the projected 8 million analogue tv's and vcr's being dumped due to the digital changeover.

This will keep resources - including copper - and jobs in this country, while ensuring the work is done using modern safety standards. There's plenty empty factories available to do this.

LETS SEE A SPECIAL TAX IF THEY'RE TO BIG

01.11.09, 3:59pm

Well George could impose a special tax if they seem to big, after all its our money so it would be a way of getting it back and may deter them from claiming them in the first place. The should be a limit put in place, and the claw back should have an independant body like the Bank of England to over see the payments. There are ways of tempering these greedy bankers, they should be reminded that its our money they are trying to grab and therefore the amount can be decided by the public to a degree. Or if they refuse we could demand it ALL back, what then no jobs? They need to come into the real world of living not the pie in the sky they have and now live in the gravy train is off the tracks for all of us why not them too.

BANKERS

01.11.09, 2:45pm

Okay, lets ask for all the money that was paid out on shares that most people in this country enjoyed over the past 10 years. Lets ask for money back from people who have made a fortune in the housing market. Lets ask for money back on all the cheap goods from China, India and other asian countries who use children.
This argument is utter rubbish. Bankers make the money for the country, they work long hours for our benefit. The people who should be locked up are the politicians who have squandered our hard earned money.

ITS SIMPLES......NO BONUSES UNTIL DEBT REPAID

31.10.09, 12:21pm

Not one bonus should be handed out until the tax payer has been repaid in full with interest.

Theses parasites should think themselves fortunate to still be in work, personally I would try them for treason, they have done more damage to this country than all of our enemies combined from down the centuries.

Once they have payed their debt they then can finance all the people who have lost their jobs: they caused it, they pay for it.

NO BONUSES FOR THREE YEARS- CAP SALARIES

28.10.09, 8:15pm

I dont think the bankers should be paid bonuses. If the bankers had returned the bonus payments they had received during the period that they were making the wrong decisions that led to the failure of their banks. I would accept that they could be paid bonuses after three years of successful trading.

I suspect that the bankers will find a way to compensate themselves for the loss of bonuses, either by increasing their salaries, or by some sort of investment perk. So I suggest that salaries be capped for the next three years.

The bankers will claim that salaries have to be high to attract the best people, forgetting that it was the "best people" that got the finance inndustry in trouble.
