IS THE £2.40 RISE FOR OAPS A DISGRACE?

Story Image

Is the rise an insult to pensioners?

Wednesday October 14,2009

AN INCREASE in the State pension of a paltry £2.40 a week next year was branded a “kick in the teeth last night.

Angry pensioner groups contrasted the meagre hike – just £124 a year – with the thousands of pounds wrongly claimed in expenses by many MPs.

Official figures released yesterday showed that the weekly payment for a single pensioner would rise from £95.25 to £97.65 next April.

A retired couple’s weekly income would rise from £152.30 to £156.15. But the expected 2.5 per cent award outraged charities and pensioner campaign groups yesterday.

Neil Duncan-Jordan, of the National Pensioners Convention, said: “At a time when politicians are arguing about not paying back money they should never have had, it’s a kick in the teeth for pensioners to get only a measly £2.40 rise.

“Put against rising fuel bills and the cost of living, this rise will be next to nothing.”

IS THE £2.40 RISE FOR OAPS A DISGRACE?

02.11.09, 9:30pm

Every day I become more and more angre with this Government. I am now on the princley sum of £54 PER WEEK PENSION. The last rise, I only recived a half, so half of £2.40 in April is worth nothing. Heaven help any MP that I come face to face with. They look after themself`s and the rest of the world but not their own. I did write to Gordon Brown when he was chasing the PM job, of course I am still waiting for a reply.

NO INTEREST ON SAVINGS AND NOW THIS INSULTING INCREASE? MORE LIKE ADDING INSULT TO INJURY

20.10.09, 5:04pm

The only one answer to this is for all the OAP to by organise themselves and then to protest through the main streets of London, so to show these con merchants and good for nothing parliamentarians that there are more of OAP than the rest of the electorate and at the next general election they will vote them out of office. They've got money for their friends the bankers, wars to safeguards the interests of the multinationals and these illegal aliens, but when it comes to OAP they are strapped for cash...what an insult £2.40 a week when they themselves have been laughing all the way to the bank with their ill gotten loot.
