Sunday July 5,2009

FORMER England amateur team-mates, Paul Waring and Seve Benson, are duelling it out for the whopping French Open first-prize and a spot in next week’s Open.

As well as a winner’s cheque of £565,000, the pair are gunning for a top-five finish and a place at Turnberry on July 16.

Liverpudlian Waring is third on nine-under par after shooting a 68, to lie two shots off Argentina’s Rafa Echenique (70) with German Martin Kaymer (69) next best on 10-under.

Guildford-based Benson, named Seve in honour of the great Ballesteros, birdied four of the closing five holes for a three-way share on eight under.

Lee Westwood is another shot back after carding a 70, while Colin Montgomerie is 11th after a 65, the round of the day.
