INVESTIGATION: Scotland Yard

Saturday July 4,2009

By Darren McCaffrey

A PEER who claimed £100,000 over seven years in overnight allowances, despite having a home 46 miles from Westminster, is being investigated by police, it was claimed yesterday.

Tory transport spokesman Lord Hanningfield also leads Essex County Council, where he enjoys a full-time chauffeur at taxpayers’ expense.

Scotland Yard is said to want to establish whether he stayed in London on the nights he claimed or returned to his home near Chelmsford.

Peers whose main home is outside London can claim £174 a night when they attend sittings of the Lords.

Lord Hanningfield has denied doing anything wrong.
