Crowds line streets of Plymouth to welcome home soldiers returning from Afghanistan

Saturday July 4,2009

By Darren McCaffrey

THOUSANDS lined the streets yesterday to hail a parade of heroes from Afghanistan.

About 700 men and women from all three services, including Royal Marines and Gurkhas, marched proudly past flag-waving members of the public in Exeter.

Prince Philip, Captain General of the Royal Marines, took the salute.

About 1,600 troops and their families attended a service of thanksgiving and remembrance at Exeter Cathedral where a roll of honour of the names of the 44 troops lost on the six-month tour of duty was read out.
