EXPRESS COMMENT

BIN THE POLITICIANS AGAINST WEEKLY RUBBISH COLLECTION

Monday July 14,2008

THE truth is out. The headlong rush towards fortnightly bin collections is not, as the Government had led people to believe, a policy being adopted by councils entirely of their own volition.

It has been co-ordinated and encouraged from Whitehall.

The Government has put the thumbscrews on councils, telling them to cut the amount of landfill being used by reducing the amount of rubbish they collect from residents.

Leaks from a “bin summit” held in London earlier this month show that ministers were keen to advise councils on how to get around opposition to the abandonment of weekly collection rounds.

Yet how overwhelming that opposition is. According to a poll discussed at the summit, only 14 per cent of people support a switch to fortnightly collections, with just four per cent describing themselves as strongly in favour.

By contrast, almost three-quarters of people actively wish to keep their weekly collection.

You would think they’d have got the message by now but neither central nor local government is listening. Official figures show that 225 councils leave two weeks between refuse collection rounds, up from 13 in 2000.

Emptying the bins in timely and orderly fashion should be one of the core functions of any decent council. But many town hall regimes now think it beneath them and prefer to lecture their residents about saving the environment.

The most effective way to combat this trend is for people to use their votes to punish those who treat them with contempt.

That does not only apply to those local councillors who have taken leave of their senses but to their ministerial masters, too.

THE RUBBISH IN THE HOUSE.

14.07.08, 8:10pm

You know, if hypocracy was gold, the richest people on earth would be labour polititions and councillors.Think of all the dumb people you've known, did'nt they all insult your intelligence?. It' because they simply do not know what the word means. Since '97 I have longed for the day when the great Blair con trick would be rumbled. It's been building up for the last few years, culminating in public ridicule of a level never seen before in this country. And yet the blind and stupid bats keep up the craziness.Where did these children of Cyclopse come from?. The troglodyte orpanage?. Give me a break, fate, some of us are surely worth more than this.
