Andrew Cowles, 32, drew gasps from the stunned audience when he took to the stage at London’s Victoria and Albert Museum.

In a brief acceptance speech, the internet entrepreneur, who had been married to Stephen since 2003, thanked the public for their support since the pop star’s death last month, aged 33.

Comedienne Sue Perkins said: “It was big, bold and wonderful. I thought it was amazing that he went up there. It showed great character.” TV star Christopher Biggins concurred. “I knew Stephen and he was a wonderful guy,” he said. “To die at just 33 was tragic. It was very brave for Andrew to get up there. It was a lovely surprise.”
