SOUTHERN SOUNDS: An extraordinary release

Friday November 6,2009

By Robert Spellman

BRISTOL'S Phantom Limb revel in the textures of soul, gospel and country.

The group’s ace is the extraordinary singer Yolanda Quartey whose voice recalls the very Southern sound of Candi Staton or Mavis Staples, while the band provide lush, semi-acoustic backdrops over which she lets us have it.

The sextet identify strongly with early Seventies soul but other elements are at play: We Will Carry and I’ll Never Be The Same Again move in cinematic directions. An intriguing release.

VERDICT  4/5
