MICHAEL Mann’s tale of Chicago gangster John Dillinger promised much but proved to be one of the summer’s biggest disappointments.

There are moments of sweaty tension and an understated central performance from Johnny Depp but Mann brings little that’s fresh to the Depression-era story and his use of cutting-edge technology and hand-held camera work is more of a distraction than an advantage.

Marion Cotillard, James Russo and Christian Bale co-star.
