Hats off to the supermarkets...but what happened to Britain?

STORES deserve success where they can find it these days.

HATS OFFTO THE SUPERMARKETS .....INDEED......!

10.03.09, 9:09pm

Destroyers of communities, retail blackholes.
Their existence should have never been.
Monopolies commission along with commonsense by' local ' planners should have forbid their getting a foothold in the UK. a nation of shopkeepers.
As for retailers being good at what they do....!
Well I think this is a cockeyed appraisal of the situation. Throw enough money at it and it will work, novelty value, deeper implications....... !
horrendous, a nightmare. International Empires,
millionairs, billionairs, against the local shopkeeoer and 'all ' a way of life entailsfor so many people.....Gone......?
Greed, bullying, international puchasing, purchasig power, economic murder, cash crops, fertilizer, pesticides on and on the nonsense goes. Good at wht they do, ...Retailers........Food miles, traffic congestion, pollution, on and on the disadvantages. Never mind, fat bank balances,
How very sad.....!

HATS OFF TO THE SUPERMARKETS..BUT WHAT HAPPENED TO BRITAIN

20.02.09, 10:41am

Disagreeing entirely with your views. Blackholes, Community destroyers, destroyers of a way of life. Beneficial only to major international financial chess players. Rid the country of thier greed, destruction. Feet on streets, think small, think local.........

THE LAST TIME BRITAIN WAS TRULY GREAT.

13.01.09, 1:27pm

Remember when the Argies decided to invade the Falkland Islands which are a British Protectorate.

Maggie Thatcher mobilised the British Forces - dealt the Argies a fully defeating blow and booted them out.
A Truly Great British Effort AND DONE LEGALLY AND MORALLY.

Unfortunately since The New Labour Incompetence Party got in under the (leadership ?) of Tony BLiar, Britain has been continually dragged down into the depths of the Abyss upon a Tide of Lies, Deceipt, Duplicity and abject Incompetence the likes of which make this Administration possibly the WORST Government in British History.

A VERY LONG TIME AGO

12.01.09, 2:06pm

I can remember when England my homeland ,was a nice country to live in, before the marxists, socialists, and liberals decided to destroy its infrastucture and told us we were not political correct enough,or just plain racist while they went about their evil deed.

RIGHT NOW

I'd settle for average. That would be a vast improvement to the state we are in. ZaNuLab have transformed us into a banana republic, minus the bananas.

BUT WHAT HAPPENED TO BRITAIN?

12.01.09, 2:29am

There was a time when "British Is Best", until other countries went into competition with us!"!

I can remember the time when the Japanese cars arrived on our shores complete with radio and heaters as standard! (Unheard of then)!

Our manufacturers fitted them as "Optional Extras", to be paid for above and beyond the showroom price!

The same with the Japanese Televisions, they worked first time you switched them on!

It was the same story with our motorcycle manufacturers, especially Triumph's, they leaked oil all over the place!
I know, I have owned several, not anymore, I now ride Japanes. and have done for some considerabl number of years!

At the time, I remember a spokesman for Triumph Motorcycles appearing on Black & White T.V, telling us that when they stripped down the Japanese Mortorcycles, the superior quality of the engineering frightened the life out of them!

There is nowt wrong with the British craftsmen, still the best in the world, the fault lies with the factory owners, whom failed to invest in modernising their factories, machinery and work practices years ago.

The Unions also have had a hand in our demise, but, they are a necessary entity, as the factory owners had/have to be forced by industrial action to increase wages for the craftsmen, with the perpetual increases in the cost of living.
Unfortunately, the "Them & Us mentality is still with us!

We have now reached a Limit to Growth Globally, as nearly every country in the world can manufacture products to a very high standard, and the global population is expanding at an astronomical rate that will in a short time, be seen to be unsustainable!

As far as I am concerned at my age, I have had the best of G.B, education wise, healthwise, etc, etc, etc!

I fear for the generations following behind me!

The day of the mountebank, lying politician may just be coming to an end, we need persons capable of running this once great country, as one would run a successful company, for, in fact, that is what G.B P.L.C is in this day and age!

WHAT HAPPENED TO BRITAIN

10.01.09, 5:52pm

britain was one of the greatest countrys in the world we had our own car ,motorcycle industry, you name it we made it ,our foods actualy had taste and had not been frozen and flown half way around the world .the decline in our countrys ability to manufacture goods that the consumer wants ,was down to lack of investment and the inability for the public to buy a product that was made in the uk.basicly the public would rather put money in foreign investers pockets rather than help its own industry.

YES BRITAIN WAS GREAT

10.01.09, 5:35pm

And not just because of its antics around the world
But Britain knew who she was, what she stood for, and why she was the most respected country in the world.
Now Britain has lost her way. She no longer knows who she is or what she was or why the respect has gone. Like an old girl in the latter stages of her life...she dithers and nods and smiles at the world.

EXCELLENT FOOD SUPPLY

10.01.09, 4:09pm

Stephen Kahn is right...our agriculture, food supply ans supermarket industries represent probably the best value-for-money in this country.
They are all efficient, well-run industries.
Whilst the banking and financial sector is definately the worst value-for-money in history.
Other lousy sectors are the civil-service and local government, where money is just thrown away in ship-loads.
The answer might be to give control of the banks to Tescos.
Give control of Local councils to Sainsburys and the Civil Service to Asda.
Manufacturing in this country has been dying for decades, but it's a great shame to see Nissans brilliant plant in Sunderland suffering.
Two countries exist...
1. Sharp, efficient UK.
2. Fat, lazy, sluggish public sector UK.

"GREAT" BRITAIN

10.01.09, 4:03pm

The "Great" in Great Britain has nothing to do with having been the best in the world at manufacturing, banking, invading other countries, or anything else. "Great" refers to the fact that it is the largest of the British islands, of which there are many. Such journalistic ignorance, or intellectual laziness is to be abhorred.
Having said that it is difficult to disagree with the author's sentiments.
