Home-grown veggies save plots of cash

CASH-strapped Britons are taking up their trowels in a bid to tackle surging food costs, experts said yesterday.

HOW DARE THE DAILY EXPRESS SAY THAT "GROCERY PRICES HAVE GONE UP 12% IN THE PAST YEAR". THE GOVERNMENT SAYS INFLATION IS RUNNING AT 2.5%. THERE'S A WORLD OF DIFFERENCE BETWEEN 2.5% AND 12% INFLATION

24.06.08, 10:25pm

Where I live inflation is currently hitting 20%.

I do not know anyone who can afford to visit the local rip-off "garden centre" and buy tomato plants or anything else.

Even the local charity shops have stuck large notices on the inside of their entrance door/s, warning that shoplifters will get a free ride in a police car.

My local greengrocer has now closed. Could not afford the extortionate Council rates every month.

Not sure which world some people live in - certainly the London and Manchester based journalists are living in cloud-cuckoo land.

Just like our MP's.

Ah! Our MP's can claim the gardener's wages on EXPENSES.

I hope Dictator Gormless Brown chokes to death on his next ten course (all expenses paid) banquet.

Hypocrites all of them.

THEY WONT BE HAPPY

24.06.08, 5:42pm

All these people growing their own veg on allotments are going to be mighty p!ssed off when they come down one day and someone has pinched it all.

Don't rely on an allotment as a food source unless you're prepared to work in armed teams to defend it..

As food prices rise you vegetable patch is going to look mighty tempting to a hungry family struggling to make ends meet.

Social concience and "doing the right thing" last about 5 seconds when money get tight and people get hungry.

GROW YOUR OWN VEG

24.06.08, 2:31pm

I would think that the millions of people who live in flats built on land that was once used as allotments etc. which Prescott and his ilk were so quick to sell off for development will be delighted they can grow veg in their window boxes. Yet another Nu Lab legacy where so much land has been concreted over to provide homes for the millions of immigrants that the nation would be unable to feed itself in basics in emergency.

HAS THE GROUND GONE FOR HOUSING

24.06.08, 10:34am

A lot cannot grow a lot of vegi because of the high density housing, how many schools teach gardening today.
Aren't people be into the technological revolution. and the farmers supply our needs.
