NUCLEAR POWER DECISION
07.01.08, 9:05pm
I believe the only way that the UK can meet it's energy needs in the immediate future is to make use of it's coalfields. Yes it does not square with so called global warming but technology can be used to reduce impact by means of carbon capture till we know what to do with the gases given off. The alternative is the reliance on energy supplied by potential rogue nations and we are seeing that now. We do not need all coal fired power but some to take up the slack. The spin offs in the reduction of our import bills and employment for the next 30 years or so will stave off any recession threat. We can't sit back and let Asia carry on burning coal alone while we see our economy collapse, Other methods of energy like wind and wave power etc can be brought on line at the same time with latest technology. We must make use of our own resources for a while and let the green movement go the same way as the CND,hippy and mods and rockers in the past. The nation NEEDS un-interupted snergy supply in the short term and not the minority tree huggers, let them go and help any nation that welcomes them, when push comes to shove ALL nations will look after number one.

N POWER

Which way do we go? Do we open up the mines again and burn coal? I can't see it as an option when this mob are trying to convince us that they are green.
Do we buy gas from overseas at a rate we can't afford?
The way forward as I see it is this.
We run a pipeline from Downing street to every house in Britain, there is enough hot air to warm every home, then the fuel we save can be used on the electricity, savings all round...sorted.

NUCLEAR POWER DECISION THIS WEEK
07.01.08, 3:03pm
My conclusions from a much longer post in the Herald: -
Conclusion:
Nuclear Fission is dangerous and expensive over its total lifetime. It also presents a strategic target for terrorists. This option must be a last resort.
Wind Power: Total contribution is insignificant and detracts from more viable solutions.
Hydro Power: Whilst this can and does make a significant contribution it cannot supply the total requirement.
Wave, Tidal and Sea Current: As the technology develops this will become the resource of choice when combined with Hydro.
Coal: This well proven system can meet the requirements over the short term of say a 20 to 30 year timescale whilst other systems are developed.
Nuclear Fusion is way into the future – if ever.

AS IF !!!!

The spokesman also confirmed that firms who build any new nuclear stations - if they are given the go-ahead - will be expected to fully fund the cost of future decommissioning of the stations.
He also said the energy companies would be expected to pay "their full share" of the cost of long-term management of nuclear waste.
Like they did in the sixties?? When the cost of decommissioning was foisted onto the electric bills??
They don't seriosly expect the British Public to trust any UK government to be in charge of Nuclear power, in any shape or form do they??

WHY NOT BUILD MORE COAL POWER STATIONS
07.01.08, 1:09pm
I'd rather have new Coal power stations myself as they'd work out cheaper. These would also help our coal industry and by the time their sell by date is up we'd stand to have a much better alternative.
Another good thing about this option is it will p-off the tree huggers
