State Of The Roads

As someone who is lucky enough to travel 3 or 4 times a year to the french alps, summer and winter alike.....i dont think i can ever remeber seeing a pot hole....even though the temperature varies greatly from -20oC to 90 oC between winter and summer, with hard frosts lower down the valley and freezing snow and water on the roads for almost 4 months of the year.

Unlike the UK the french roads are made of a diffenet mix of gravel (granite,slate etc) as well as the usual tar etc and they also put ground powdered green glass in the mix to make it even harder wearing from what i am told....unlike the soft putty we seem to be lumbered with.

As for the road works holding up traffic, on a recent holidau the entire road from the end of Lake Annecy's southern end to the village of Ugine was taken up and relaid with 10 days.....why does the same operation here take ten years??????.

Some reasons are roads are in the state they are and with the usual excuse of underfunding and lack of money it may help to note that half you're current road tax is cyphoned off to bolster the welfare payments of all the workshy scroungers ,....last year the government raise almost 65 billion pounds from fuel ,road tax yet only around 4 - 5 billion is actually spent on the roads.......
