My husband and I own our own home worth approx. £500,000
We both left school at 15 years old and worked our socks off to buy this home, I can remember my husband working for 20 weeks without one day off in the last recession just to keep up the mortgage repayments. We have never asked anyone for a penny to keep us. We never got into any debt apart from the mortgage, we have saved for what we wanted. Whilst I feel sorry for anyone losing their jobs homes Etc, a lot of them have racked up unsustainable debts over the years for holidays cars etc, something that we always saved for, you can't have everything. We bought our home in 1986 for £50,000 it is not our fault that it is now worth £500,000 this does not make us rich, we took out a 20 year mortgage which is now paid.We still need to live and work in London, so the value of our property means nothing to us, as we still need a roof over our heads. We have not earned fantastic salaries over the years, but we have managed. We have one child, and if you know anything about state education in London you will know that you also have to top up the child's education with private tuition, to give them anything like a decent chance in life.
No we are not rich Stevewo just hardworkers.
The only way we could access the money our property is worth is to sell it, and buy a two up two down terrace property in Hull and live off the profit from the sale of our home, but we prefer to live in London where all our family live,
Oh and by the way we were both brought up on Council Estates. Don't assume who is rich and who is not just by the value of their property that is just so so ignorant.
