In a few words:

globalisation and farming

Published: Friday July 25,2008 by snflartuz

that case put below is flawed on many different levels. the main one is that the uk is not an isolated country on this planet. it trades with countries all over the world.

the result is that wages and prices are not isolated, but in competition with wages and prices form all over the world.

you can't just say 'pay uk people more' because that is not how it works. if you pay them more, the goods become more expensive and do not sell when in competition with cheaper goods from abroad.

when firms are faced with that dilemma, there are two option:

1. close down in the face of competition. which means job losses.

2. move production abroad, which means losing jobs here and exporting them overseas.

that is the reality of the situation. a situation that was ushered in in the 80's under thatcher and the tories. is is called 'neo-liberalism' and is basically free market economics on a global scale.

hopefully that is explained simply enough.
